Many Just Don’t Know

Listen Some say, “Just vote!” But the wiser question is: for whom—or what? Each election cycle, it gets harder to separate genuine candidates from those who simply wear the right mask. Politicians increasingly camouflage their records, sometimes even reinventing themselves entirely to appeal to different districts. Others seem to coast into office on name recognition alone. And sadly, many of us don’t even know who represents us—or which district we actually live in. It wasn’t always like this. Today, more tricks and tactics are being used to confuse voters. Still, the ultimate responsibility rests with us. Some people are losing healthcare, SNAP benefits, or seeing their Social Security reduced—because they voted for someone who quietly supported those cuts while saying the opposite in public. It gets even worse! Some are losing their farms that have been in their families for many generations. Take artificial intelligence. It’s a powerful tool, yet many would think twice about embracing it if they knew it might drive up their electric bills, contaminate local water, or create other environmental risks. And then there’s a deeper concern: our service members. Nothing is more important than ensuring that the men and women we send into harm’s way are sent there wisely, by leaders who think clearly and act responsibly. I know this firsthand—I served in the Vietnam War, and that experience stays with me every day. I’m not writing this to make it about me, but for context: I’m an 81-year-old Marine Corps veteran. I’d like to believe I gave my best to protect democracy and our way of life. But now, it’s about my children and grandchildren. I’d never forgive myself if I voted for someone unqualified who later sent them into danger without a clear plan. I’m not saying that’s happening right now—but even the thought unsettles me.
